What to Ask When Buying Meat Direct from a Farmer
Buying meat directly from a farmer is different from buying at a grocery store. You are building a relationship with the person who raised the animal, and the more you ask up front, the better your experience will be.
Here are the most important questions to ask a farmer before placing an order, whether you are buying individual cuts or a quarter cow.
Questions about the meat
What cuts are available? Do you sell individual cuts, bulk orders, or both? What is the price per pound? Is pricing based on hanging weight or take-home weight? What is included in a quarter or half? Can I choose my cutting instructions?
Questions about farming practices
How are the animals raised? Are they grass-fed, grain-finished, or both? Are they on pasture? Do you use hormones or antibiotics? Are you certified organic or Certified Humane? What do the animals eat during winter?
These questions matter because terms like 'grass-fed' and 'pasture-raised' are not always regulated the same way. The farmer's answers tell you exactly what you are getting.
Questions about delivery and pickup
Do you offer delivery? What areas do you deliver to? Is there a delivery fee? Do you do farmers' markets? Where and when? Can I pick up at the farm? What are your pickup hours?
Questions about payment
What payment methods do you accept? Do you require a deposit for bulk orders? When is the balance due? Do you offer payment plans for large orders?
Questions about timing
When is your next slaughter date? How long from order to pickup? Do you have meat available year-round or seasonally? Do I need to pre-order or do you keep stock?
Red flags to watch for
A farmer who cannot answer basic questions about how their animals are raised, pricing that seems too good to be true, or a farm that has no working phone or email. On Silioa, we verify contact information before listing a farm — but you should still ask your own questions.
